The lectures will examine those aspects of classical and quantum electrodynamics that are not normally part of the preparation of an AMO (atomic, molecular, and optical) physicist, but that are fundamental for understanding strong-field phenomena. This includes the behavior of free electrons with laser fields, both classically and quantum mechanically.

Prof. Howard Reiss will give the lecture of High-Field Laser Physics during the semester FS 10.
The lecture takes place every Wednesday from 12.45 till 14.30 in the room HIT F 11.1
An additional hour of exercises is scheduled on Wednesday from 14.45 till 15.30 always in HIT F 11.1

Important informations

The lecture scheduled on Wednesday 10th of March will be given on Monday 8th of March in the room HPT F8, 13.45 - 15.30
The lecture scheduled on Wednesday 17th of March will be given on Monday 22nd of March in the room HPT E13.1, 13.45 - 15.30

Therefore, for the month of March 2010 these are the lecture dates:

3rd March HIT F11.1 12.45 - 14.30
8th March HPT F8 13.45 - 15.30
22nd March HPT E13.1 13.45 - 15.30
24th March HIT F11.1 12.45 - 14.30
31st March HIT F11.1 12.45 - 14.30

Suggested Literature

Resource paper 1

Prog. Quant. Electr. 16, 1 (1992)
This is a resource paper for strong-fields in general. Many fundamentals are presented here in detail, especially for a relativistic formulation. However, the review of the applications is many years out of date.

Resource paper 2

Physical review A 75, 013413 (2007)
The discussion of the basic time scales in this paper is directly related to later treatment in class of tunneling properties.

Resource paper 3

Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 043002 (2008)
This paper is directly related to the basic matter of limitations on the dipole approximation; a topic not properly discussed in most textbooks.
